Who are mates in mind?

Mates in Mind is a leading Charity, enabling UK organisations, of any size, to improve and take proactive steps to raising mental health awareness and understanding across their teams. They bring industry insight, expertise, and a preventative approach around reducing the stigma and starting conversations about mental health across hundreds of workplaces. Importantly, their proactive approach enables individuals to understand how, when and where they can get support before they reach crisis point.

To date they have supported over 750 businesses and reached almost 700,000 employees directly.

If the alarming statistic that you are almost 4 times more likely to take your own life if you are a male working in the construction industry isn’t enough, here are a few more stats for you to share:

  • A third of Construction Workers live with extreme levels of anxiety.
  • 2 in 3 UK tradespeople have misused drugs and/or alcohol to mitigate symptoms of mental ill health.
  • 3 out of 5 employees experience mental health issues because of work.
  • Up to 90% of employees give a different reason for absences relating to stress/mental health.
  • 46% of UK tradespeople feel somewhat or completely uncomfortable talking to their colleagues about mental health.
  • Poor mental health in workplace costs UK employers up to £56bn per annum.
  • At least half a million more people in UK may experience mental ill health as a result of Covid-19” - Centre for Mental Health.
A word from the Managing Director of Mates in Mind, Sam Downie
At Mates in Mind we advocate for creating positive mental health in and through work, by building a culture of prevention. Organisations have a key role to play in this, not least because they have a legal duty of care to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of their employees. We believe that implementing a continuous and comprehensive approach can help reduce the likelihood of individuals reaching a crisis point, as supporting positive mental health in and through work becomes an integral part of everyone’s role.

How your fundraising can help:

  • £50 supports our text service for a day, and that could be the day you help to save or change someone’s life.
  • £1,000 enables us to provide mental health training for 100 workers.
  • £2,500 can set 10 small organizations up with mental health support.

Also, Mated in Mind recognise the need to increased support for those struggling with substance use and so are working with a specialist provider charity to develop interventions tailored to those working in construction.
