Birmingham’s “Super-Hospital” continues construction after a two-year delay

“The new name recognises the abiding excellence of our work with Birmingham University, and our nursing collaborations with Wolverhampton and with Birmingham City. It also commemorates this year’s start of clinical placements within Aston Medical School, for which the trust is the largest party.” - Toby Lewis Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust’s chief executive

Due to fischer’s close relationship with Carillion and NG Bailey M&E, they had the opportunity to work on the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital Smethwick after a two-year delay. It will be a new acute general hospital being built near Birmingham which will become the civic heart of the area and an obvious point of pride for the community.

The hospital was originally contracted by Carillion until they went into liquidation in January 2018 which caused major delays in the completion. Setting the original completion date back two years for a completion in the summer of 2022 with the direction of the new contractor Balfour Beatty. The total project is set to cost £673 million for the 670-bed hospital which is being built over the 16-acre site. It will have approximately 80,000 square meters of floor space and offer maternity, children’s and inpatient services to half a million people.

fischer supplied over 200,000 fixings for the project including many steel, chemical and insulation fixings for Façade, RC Frame, M&E Services and Car Park Soffit insulation packages. SIG, VJT, Jack Pennington’s, RJ Fixings, Edmundson’s and Elite Fasteners were the distributors for the many different fixings. By supplying fischer’s unique FNA anchor, there was a huge increase in installation speed and performance. This was also important as the concrete structure was C75 instead of C35/40 as it was initially identified.

fischer’s office-based staff and external team of site engineers were able to assist whenever necessary and freely exchanged their expert knowledge of fixings. Their ability to carry out regular site testing helped seal the vote of confidence in the supplier’s direction. fischer U.K.’s own Adrian Williams performed numerous C-Fix designs which were followed up with several site tests to support the calculations. fischer were chosen for this project based on their technical onsite support, solution support for pre-tension wires in concrete structures and the quick fulfilment of large bulk orders.
